Horeku. The Stories of Tukhard Tundra

360 film and installation. 2020

Co-authored with Andrey Nosov

Synopsis

Horeku. Stories of the Tukhard Tundra is a VR documentary about nomadic reindeer herders who live in the tundra that is practically inaccessible to us, city dwellers. They still preserve their traditional way of life: they roam the tundra with a herd of deer, live in tents and ravines, sew clothes, and make a dwelling out of reindeer skins. But at the same time, these are modern people who use mobile communications, watch TV series, and are interested in the events taking place in the world. The VR camera immerses us in the world of the Nenets nomad. The main character, the storyteller Vasilina, recalls stories from the life of her family, and talks about her reindeer and the peculiarities of life in the tundra. 360-video sometimes follows the logic of her story, and sometimes it exists on its own, allowing the viewer to build his associative picture. The views of the winter and summer tundra are replaced by the interiors of the chum and filming with a reindeer team. Three stories replace each other in a leisurely rhythm, following the melodious and pensive voice of the Vasilina.
